Welcome to a special edition of “A Slice of Savory Sunday!”
Today’s edition of “A Slice of Savory Sunday” is special, because it is the last day of my paid summer internship! Don’t worry, I’m still the main intern for Savory Sunday, I’m just not going to be paid for it after this!
Anyways, I would like to apologize for a mistake I made. Last week, I said I would be making Banh Mi sandwiches, but the plans for that fell through, so we went with our old reliable: bratwurst! And hot dogs! Isn’t it funny how the first and last meals I recorded on this blog had bratwurst as their main courses? I sure think so! Anyways…
On Thursday, Paul and I worked together to prepare the sausages on the grill, as well as some kale I picked up at the farmer’s market the day before. Once we were done preparing them, we stored them in the refrigerator for Sunday. On Saturday, I went to the grocery store and picked up 7 bags of hotdog buns, which I then stored in the fridge alongside the sausages and kale.
Today, at 11:15am, I headed out to the place where I stored the food so that I could reheat it for the meal. After transferring the sausages to new pans (with an additional inch of water to prevent burning), I slapped them into the oven to let them heat back up. They had already been cooked, so they didn’t need to be in for too long. Once all the sausages were reheated, I gathered up some volunteers, and we all carried the food to the state capitol!
Right as we got to the West Washington entrance of the capitol, another Savory Sunday Captain had just arrived, and was unloading their side of the meal from the back of their car. After helping them with the process, we went inside, I got the capitol police to open up the basement, and we all headed downstairs. When we got down there, there were a LOT of people waiting for food! Right at that moment, I knew this was going to be the ultimate final challenge of my summer internship…
We set up shop in our usual spot, and I took charge in handing out sausages and buns to people. The other volunteers were in charge of distributing the kale I brought, as well as the mini-oranges, brownies, chocolate chip bread, and apple juice the other captain brought. The serving process was like a hurricane: extremely intense, but it breezed past in no time at all! It got a little hectic trying to fit the sausages into the buns with so many hungry people waiting in line, but I kept my cool and powered through! People seemed to be big fans of the sausages we made, and there were still kale enthusiasts like last time, too! Overall, I’d say we served around 50 to 55 people today, for a total of 60 meals. Quite impressive, and exceptionally fitting for the final paid day of my internship!
Now, with tomorrow being my last first day of school ever, I’m not entirely sure about the future of “A Slice of Savory Sunday”. I still want to continue this blog, but with the inevitability of homework, I don’t know if I’ll be able to update this blog every week. Still, I’ll try to make an effort to highlight the most noteworthy Savory Sundays going forwards, and if that means all of them, so be it! So I’ll see you next time for another… “Slice of Savory Sunday!”
