Are you OK? You’ve barely touched your “Slice of Savory Sunday”!

After two weeks of making ice cream bread, I was tasked with cooking up something a little greener and healthier for this week’s meal! On Friday, Paul taught me how to saute kale on the stove: wash the kale, tear the leaves off the stems, coat them with olive oil and garlic powder (and a hint of lemon juice), and cook them on the stovetop for about fifteen minutes! It’s a deceptively easy food to make, and armed with this knowledge, I picked up some kale from the farmer’s market on Saturday, and cooked it up on my stove on Sunday morning!

Once all that was done, I headed out to the capitol at 1:30 with my kale and serving supplies in tow. When I arrived, I helped another Savory Sunday captain carry their part of the meal downstairs, where we met two more captains and their parts of the meal. In total, the menu for the day consisted of meatball subs (on hotdog buns), the kale I prepared, assorted chips, bagged turkey sandwiches, mini oranges, two sliced-up grocery store cakes, bottled water, and the fruit juice in barrel-shaped containers from a month back!

I decided to take charge in placing meatballs in buns for people, as well as scooping up some extra sauce for those who wanted it and handing out kale, too. Naturally, there were a few people who didn’t care much for kale, but those who did care were quite impressed by how I prepared it! In total, around 40 people were served that day, and just about everyone who came got a meal!

Next time, I will be in charge of preparing the main course for the weekly meal, and I don’t mean I’m going to be picking stuff up from a restaurant! I’m going to be making a sandwich that I tried for the first time this summer, and it’s one I can’t get enough of: the Banh Mi! See you next time on… “A Slice of Savory Sunday!”
