What time is it? It’s time for “A Slice of Savory Sunday”!
Sometimes, things don’t always go the way we expect them to. With the rousing success of my vanilla ice cream bread in last week’s meal, I was fully expecting the chocolate ice cream bread I made this week to be a similar hit. Well…
On Friday, I went to the grocery store to pick up the stuff I needed. I bought two containers of chocolate ice cream, a bag of chocolate chips, additional loaf tins, and an extra bag of flour. Like last week, I spent Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning baking four loaves of ice cream bread. Compared to last time, I found mixing the dough and pouring it into the pans to be easier and more satisfying, likely due to the flour and ice cream being different colors this time.
On Sunday afternoon, I headed out to the capitol with my four loaves of ice cream bread and serving supplies in tow. I arrived at the capitol around 1:40, and when I went downstairs, the other Savory Captains were already down there, handing out food to people! They had apparently arrived a little earlier than usual, and started serving about 10 minutes before I arrived. They were serving casserole, salad, oranges, and PB&J sandwiches, as well as homemade brownies and mini cupcakes!
At first, I was a little disheartened that my ice cream bread wasn’t as necessary as it was last week, but ultimately, it didn’t matter. While plenty of folks preferred a brownie or mini cupcake with their meal, some of the people from last week were more than happy to try a different flavor! In total, I want to say around 35-ish people were served that day, which is the average amount of people who get served every Sunday.
Still, only two of the four loaves I made got consumed by the patrons, so what did I do with the other two? Well, I shared one with the Savory Captains, as well as some of my friends, and I kept the last one for myself! So while this Slice of Savory Sunday is a little more bittersweet than usual, I learned an important lesson for next time: don’t get your expectations too high for something that hasn’t happened yet.
As for next time? Well, I don’t know what to expect next, but I’m sure it’ll be good! Catch you next time for another “Slice of Savory Sunday”!
