Are you hungry? Because I’ve got “A Slice of Savory Sunday” just for you!

Last week, I said I would be making a dessert from scratch for the weekly meal. Did I fully commit and keep my promise? You bet I did! And while the dessert I made had a super simple recipe, it was still a smash hit with the patrons! But what kind of dessert was it? Let’s find out!

On Thursday night, I went out to the grocery store to pick up what I needed to make my dessert. I bought some loaf tins, a bottle of cooking spray, a bag of self-rising flour, two containers of vanilla ice cream, and a bottle of rainbow sprinkles. Now, you might be thinking “That’s it? What could he possibly have made with such few ingredients?” but you might also be thinking “Oh! He made ice cream bread, duh!” and you’d be correct!

While this might have been the first time I ever baked anything by myself, ice cream bread is so simple that I had no problems making it four times to feed enough people! First, I let the ice cream soften so that it would be easier to scoop, and preheated my oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Once the ice cream was soft enough, I scooped two cups of it into a large mixing bowl, followed by one and a half cups of self-rising flour. Then I mixed it around until it had the consistency of bread dough, and poured it into a greased loaf pan, where I added some sprinkles for color. Lastly, I put the pan in the oven, pulled it out after 45 minutes, let it cool on the counter, and put a lid on it to keep it fresh! Ice cream bread may sound strange at first, but if you think about it for a moment, it’s actually genius! The ice cream provides the sugar, fat, dairy, and flavor for the bread, and I went with self-rising flour to save on baking soda and powder.

After finishing my fourth loaf on Sunday, I packed them all up and headed out to the capitol to serve. Once I got there, I helped the other Savory Captains get the rest of the meal (a chicken casserole, salad, and some bagged sandwiches) downstairs, and got the police to open up the basement. After setting up, we got to serving, and naturally, I was in charge of slicing and handing out my homemade ice cream bread! Like I said, it was a smash hit with the patrons, many of whom were impressed that I made it all by myself! I think my favorite interaction of the day was with one man who put a lot of hot sauce on his casserole, and I advertised my ice cream bread to him as a way of dampening the spice if it was too hot (both ice cream and bread are good at that)! In total, around 35 people got served that day, and none of my ice cream bread went to waste! By the end of the meal, I had saved myself the last slice just to try it for myself, and it was as good as everyone said it was!

This week, I will be making more ice cream bread, but this time with chocolate ice cream and chocolate chips instead of vanilla ice cream and sprinkles. Tune in next time for another… “Slice of Savory Sunday”!
