Welcome back to “A Slice of Savory Sunday.”
Well, it happened. I was in charge of providing the main meal this week, and boy did I provide it! But what did I provide? Let me tell you!
On the Friday before Savory Sunday, Paul and I made our way to Teddywedgers, a small local restaurant that serves traditional beef pasties. For those who don’t know, a pasty is sort of like a meat pie sandwich: a pastry crust stuffed with meat and assorted veggies. At Teddywedgers, the default pasty is stuffed with beef, potatoes, onions, and just a hint of rutabaga! Trust me when I say they’re delicious! We ordered 25 of those for Sunday, alongside 10 beef and cheese, 10 chicken pot pie, and 5 veggie for good measure.
On Sunday the 13th, the air was thick with wildfire smoke and the streets were thick with people coming to see artwork in stalls around the capitol square. There was a considerable line at Teddywedgers, but I toughed it out with my buddy and we picked up the 50 pasties that were ordered on Friday. Carrying this huge order to the capitol was going to be a huge ordeal… if it weren’t for another Savory Sunday captain coming in clutch with a wagon! With their help, getting the pasties to the capitol basement was a breeze!
We arrived at the capitol basement a little earlier than usual: around 1:20 compared to the usual 1:45. Regardless, we started serving as soon as we could. The pasties we ordered were accompanied by the usual sack lunch fixings: PB&J and turkey sandwiches, clementines, a box of assorted bagged chips, rice krispie treats for dessert, and plenty of bottled water for the summer heat! We also had assorted fruit juice in cute plastic barrels instead of bottles, which I can confirm are just as refreshing as the water. While service was a little slow at first (likely because we started so early), it picked up as the minutes ticked by, and by the end of the meal, 39 people were fed! I noticed that we ran out of the cheesy beef and chicken pot pie pasties rather quickly, while the veggie wedgies barely got touched. Oh well! Live and learn, I suppose!
As I will be on break from July 15th to July 25th, there will not be a blog post for the July 20th meal. I will be back in action for the 27th and onwards, though, so see you then!
