Welcome back to a special edition of “A Slice of Savory Sunday”.
Why is this edition so special, you may ask? Because this Savory Sunday was on my 24th birthday! While I had plans for a great party with my friends later, my job always comes first. Work all day and party all night, that’s what I always say! (I don’t always say this)
Two fellow Savory Sunday Captains provided the main course of this week’s meal: brats, sauerkraut, and potato salad. Yeah, I know I’ve already written about a bratwurst meal in this blog before, but we’re based in Wisconsin, so it’s not too unusual. Anyways, the rest of the meal was provided by some volunteers from a local church. They provided us with salad greens, mini-oranges, a big box of bagged chips, bagged sandwiches (turkey, salami, and PB&J), twinkies and rice crispy treats for dessert, and plenty of bottled waters because this particular Sunday was BRUTALLY hot!
I was asked to bring the serving supplies to this meal: the plates, serving utensils, forks, napkins, gloves, hand sanitizer, and wet wipes to clean up the tables once we were done. Once we were all set up, we got to serving, and I helped a volunteer I recruited put together paper bag lunches for the patrons to eat either alongside their meals or save for later. In total, we served around 40 people that day, many of whom wished me a happy birthday after I handed them their lunches!
Overall, this Savory Sunday was a smash hit! While most people would rather not work on their birthdays, I take pride in my work, so this was just as exciting as the party I had later that day, but that’s a story for a different, much more casual blog!
