Hello, my name is Cory Gould, and welcome to “A Slice of Savory Sunday”.

For those who don’t know, Savory Sunday is a non-profit organization that aims to feed the hungry and less-fortunate members of the Madison community every Sunday. It started out with a group of ragtag volunteers handing out bagged sandwiches as they traveled along State Street, but over time, it has evolved into serving full-blown, home cooked meals every Sunday.

I have been an intern for Savory Sunday for over a year as of writing this, and this summer I decided to make a blog to spread the word of Savory Sunday across the internet, while also keeping an accurate recollection of each week’s meal. This entry here is for the meal that took place on May 25, 2025.

On Memorial Day Weekend, Bratfest came to Madison. While I indulged in good food, thrilling rides, and petting zoos on Saturday, at 11:45am the next day, me, Paul, and a small group of volunteers gathered together  at the Madison Senior Center for a “Bratfest” of our own. In the kitchen, Paul assisted a volunteer in searing brats and boiled sauerkraut. I chopped potatoes and tossed a salad with another volunteer, and a group of four other volunteers baked some (frankly delicious) chocolate chip cookies from scratch. Including the time it took to clean up and transport the prepared food to Paul’s car, this whole affair took our team a little less than two hours.

But then it was time to serve the fruits of our labor. As I led the volunteers to the capitol building, we asked some folks on the street if they were hungry and if they would like some brats. A couple of them said “yes”, and followed us down into the basement of the capitol building. We set up shop, I handed out plates to people waiting in line, and by 1:45, we started serving! Paul dished out the brats and kraut, I scooped potato chunks and salad, and the remaining volunteers served milk and cookies. In total, we ended up serving around 32 people, many of whom came back for seconds and even thirds by the end. At 2:30, the flow of patrons slowed down, and we were done for the day. All in all, a very successful Memorial Day Eve!
